Thermal transfer overprinters for flexible packaging

TTO uses a digitally controlled thermal printhead and ribbon to apply variable information to supported flexible packaging films and labels. The packaging motion, film, ribbon and mechanical integration must be considered together.

Where to start

  • Flow-wrap packaging
  • Form-fill-seal equipment
  • Flexible films and labels
  • Dates, batches, barcodes and simple graphics

Flexible packaging

Variable data before or during pack formation

Labels

High-detail text and barcode applications

Resistance needs

Match ribbon to film, heat and abrasion exposure

Details that prevent a costly mismatch

  1. 01Intermittent or continuous packaging motion
  2. 02Film composition and surface
  3. 03Print area and printhead width
  4. 04Ribbon grade, width and winding
  5. 05Mounting bracket and available space
  6. 06Signal, encoder and control integration

Practical answers

What must match in a TTO installation?

The packaging motion, printer configuration, film, ribbon and mounting arrangement must work together. Share whether the machine runs intermittently or continuously, the required print area, and photos of the installation before requesting a recommendation.

What is the main difference between TTO and TIJ?

TTO transfers ribbon onto supported flexible material; TIJ ejects ink from a cartridge. The packaging process and substrate determine which to evaluate.

Does TTO work on every film?

No. Film and ribbon compatibility, print settings and packaging motion require testing.

What details are needed for a quotation?

Send the packaging machine model, film, motion type, print area, line speed, installation photos and existing ribbon reference.

Send the material, code and line details.

CHEEF will help review technology fit, compatibility questions and quotation scope.
